There are an unfortunate number of examples of ethical violations in the history of research on human subjects. Temporal context, or the norms of society at those times, plays a large role in how we document historical events – including sometimes allowing for forgiveness on such a basis.
Consider this week’s reading assignment – the NIH Bioethics Timeline https://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/resources/bioethics/timeline/index.cfm (https://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/resources/bioethics/timeline/index.cfm)
• Select one of the examples of ethical violations in research from the timeline. Discuss some of the key issues related to your selected example, include temporal context.
• Despite how unethical this may seem to us in the current day, what factors may have played a role in attracting subjects to participate in this study?
• Respond to 2 or more peers about the following:
◦ If not for current-day safeguards, such violations could still occur today. There are many groups that remain wary of participating in research activities because of historical events.
◦ Select a vulnerable population group and discuss how or why they may feel greater coercion or more averse to volunteer
ing as research subjects. How has this been (or how could it be) overcome?
