In this final reflection essay, you will focus on one area of financial literacy covered in Chapter 18, either budgeting, building credit or paying for college. Through your reflective writing, you will be showing evidence of your journey and thoughts on this area. Reflective thinking involves: Looking back at something (in this case before you started the financial literacy unit); thinking in-depth about what you learned, looking at things differently; thinking in depth about what it means for your on-going future as a financially literate person.

This is great as long as you are reflective and think where your weaknesses come from and how you might improve. In reflective writing, you will use yourself and your own growth and/or challenges as your support, as well as evidence from the resources we used in this unit. You should not just summarize, but look deeply at how your knowledge has grown.

Use specifics: refer to specific readings, videos, and personal experiences to illustrate what you learned and how you learned it. As you discuss what you learned, I will be looking for proof and evidence. Here are some ways to do this:

Use quotes or paraphrases from at least three sources from this unit. Reference the articles you read for assignment 16 or other articles you find on your own.

Think about how your experience may relate to that of others and what impacts a person’s views on finances in general.

Aim to make your introduction compelling to your readers. Start with an interesting observation or a story. This is a personal reflection, so feel free to write in a personal tone. Think about a situation where you previously handled money well or poorly; or a startling fact or statistic about finances.

Otherwise, your introduction should also introduce your topic and then explain why this is an important topic. Then end with a claim about what you have learned or how your knowledge about financial literacy has grown. This claim is your thesis statement.

Your body paragraphs should prove your claim—they should show how you’ve developed/what you’ve learned. Your body paragraphs should reflect on your financial knowledge before we started this unit, where you are now, and what else you might need to learn in the future.

The conclusion of the essay should wrap up everything you have discussed within the introduction and body of your work. Remember, it must “echo” the introduction. Think of the conclusion as having a conversation with the intro. Here, you bring your reflection to a close by readdressing whatever you used to grab your readers’ attention – a quote, a question, an anecdote, or an interesting observation.
